How to use the Google Ads Preview Tool

  1. Add your URL and paths. Your domain shows as the display URL. Two optional paths of up to 15 characters each tell searchers where the click lands.
  2. Write headlines and descriptions. Google allows up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters. Write at least 8 to 10 distinct headlines.
  3. Shuffle combinations. Google mixes your headlines and descriptions. Shuffle to check that every combination still reads well.
  4. Fix the flags. The tool flags over-long lines, exclamation marks in headlines, repeated headlines and words in all capitals.

Frequently asked questions

What are the character limits for Google responsive search ads?

Headlines can be up to 30 characters each, with up to 15 headlines per ad. Descriptions can be up to 90 characters each, with up to 4 per ad. Each of the two display URL paths can be up to 15 characters.

How many headlines does Google show at once?

Usually up to three headlines and up to two descriptions, chosen by Google for each search. Fewer may show on mobile or when space is tight, which is why every headline should make sense on its own.

Can I use exclamation marks in Google Ads headlines?

No. Google's editorial policy does not allow exclamation marks in headlines. One exclamation mark is allowed in a description.

Is this the exact Google layout?

It is a close preview for checking length, flow and combinations. Google changes its layout often and may add assets such as sitelinks or your business name, so the live ad can look slightly different.

Is my ad copy saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
